In the patio garden of the National Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam stands the “Dankteken”, a sculpture donated to the museum by the National Dankteken Foundation. The artwork consists of a ladder leaning against an open hatch. At the end of the ladder, there is light and open air. The ladder itself symbolises the resistance fighters and individuals who risked their own lives and the lives of their loved ones to help others. The hatch represents the connection between safety and freedom.
