Den Helder (NL)
Steel, glass, concrete, light
Commissioned by Municipality of Den Helder
Like how the city Den Helder originated from the sea, the stairs and sculptural forms look like they have been washed ashore, tilted over the dike and rolled into the city. Because of this arises an orientation point, a panoramic viewpoint and a place to stay for recreation, events and encounters.
The dike is an elongated triangle, like the letter D (∆) from ‘delta’, the triangle in the Greek alphabet and as a symbol for the city Den Helder, which is surrounded by sea on three sides. The design for Delta is a spatial composition made of monumental concrete stairs on both sides of the dike about which tilt big triangular sculptures of steel and glass. The composition visualises the dynamic connection between sea, dike and city.
