The project started with an open competition. Stichting NDSM-werf and 3X3 Unites had run a popular street basketball program on the site and wanted a design that would elevate the courts into something more than a makeshift sports facility. PolyLester won with a proposal that did not decorate the edge of the field but defined it: three monumental figurative sculptures that would make players and visitors feel they had stepped into an arena.

The three figures depict two men and one woman, each composed of two interlocking concrete elements. The forms are semi-abstract. Voids cut through the body to suggest movement; solid mass stops it. The result sits between figuration and abstraction, between a frozen photograph and a body in full motion.

The scale was the main challenge from the start. At eight meters, the sculptures had to read clearly across a large open terrain while remaining in genuine spatial dialogue with the people playing beneath and around them. Structural engineering, casting tolerances, and transport logistics all had to be resolved without compromising the sculptural intent.
