Each sheet is carefully shaped by hand. They are suspended from the ceiling by wires. Lester was also inspired by Paul Veroude’s disassembled Formula 1 cars with the parts hung in mid-air, like an expression of a captured fraction of a second.
TWIRL embodies layer upon layer of transformations over space, time, and form. The landscape in an Eastern 1830s woodcut has become a photo of a dreary Western no man’s land in modern times, which in turn has stepped out of two-dimensionality into three-dimensionality, denuded of landscape and all previous references. The only thing revealing the spiralling motion and volume of the strong gust is the white sheets of paper.
Blank sheets. Tabula rasa. An unmarked slate. An empty page. A paper waiting to be filled. Thoughts, words to be formulated and printed.
The desire to fill the blank page with new ideas, theories, formulas, solutions, answers. A new story. A new life. A new world?
TWIRL is a wind, whirling white leaves, empty pages. TWIRL is dreams and hopes. TWIRL is everything you want and can be.
